In this section you will find video tutorials and helpful resources to teach you the basics of creating a good automotive sketch; from understanding proportions and volume as well as line quality and perspective excercises. You’re welcome to save any images you need and high resolution files will soon be available over on my ‘Gumroad’ Page.
These are just a few examples of vehicle segments there are so many in todays industry and it’ll only continue to grow. Familiarise yourself with every segment you can to understand what it is you’re designing and what’s expected from you when working to a brief.
A vehicles proportions and package (what is a package?) determine the overall form factor and it’s key that these are considered at all times. A vehicles ‘wheel base’ and engine/ drivetrain position ultimately dictate the whole design process and whether or not your proposal will be suitable for its intended purpose.
Think practically and sensibly when putting pen to paper. What is it that you’re designing? What is the brief asking for? do you have a set package to work to? Proportions are one of the main areas to focus on when designing a vehicle, but good proportions mean nothing if the design doesn’t work
