The Importance of Mood Boards

This is one of, if not THE most important step in the early stages of any project. It set the tone and style of your entire design language. It should both inform and be informed by your personas and you should be referring to them on a regular basis in order to maintain continuity throughout a project.

A mood board should show many things; for example, colour and trim combinations that may link nicely to materials. Materials would then partially dictate form language; sculpture and art will greatly inform the shapes and features of a product. Power train and location may determine size and form factor. having this information decided prior to the design phase will greatly increase you chances of having a well rounded and coherent project

An incredible source of inspiration can be found on Pinterest; have a look at over 100 collections i have gathered over the years to help you get started.

What is a persona?

A ‘persona’ is a brief insight into the type of individual your product is designed for. This should be short and to the point but still say enough (through text and visuals) about their personalities hobbies and lifestyle to give you as the designer, an informed idea of what you should be considering. A strong ‘persona’ will build a solid foundation to develop and convincing and useful product.
